Why We Focus On Healthy Gums Before Dental Implants
A dental implant depends on the health of the tissues supporting it.
Before treatment, your dentist will assess the condition of your gums, available bone, bite, remaining teeth and existing infections.
Patients with bleeding gums, deep gum pockets, loose teeth or active gum disease may require stabilisation before implant placement. Treating these conditions first may help create a healthier and more manageable foundation for the implant restoration.
Comprehensive Gum Examination
A comprehensive gum examination is done during your 1st consultation with us.
The gum examination involves the assessment of the health of the tissues supporting your teeth and the areas that will support your planned dental implants.
Your dental implant dentist will check for bleeding, swelling, gum recession, loose teeth, deep gum pockets and signs of bone loss.
Measurements may be taken around each tooth to determine whether gum disease is present and how advanced it may be.
Your bite, oral hygiene and existing dental restorations may also be reviewed.
This examination helps identify infections or inflammation that should be managed before implant treatment.
A healthier gum foundation may improve treatment planning and support the long-term maintenance of your teeth and dental implants.
Dental X-rays or 3D CBCT imaging
Dental X-rays and 3D X-rays (CBCT scans) are done to help your dental implant dentist examine your oral structures, bone depth, width and density.
In the case of upper dental implant placement, 3D diagnostics help to show the location of sinus spaces. It can also accurately point out the nerves.
The imaging is then used to plan implant positioning, identify infections and determine whether bone grafting is required.
Root Planning
If you have existing gum disease that needs to be treated, root planning or deep gum cleaning is done.
These treatments help to manage gum disease below the gum line.
During treatment, plaque, hardened tartar and bacterial deposits are removed from the tooth roots and deep gum pockets.
The root surfaces are then cleaned and smoothed to reduce areas where bacteria can accumulate.
This treatment may help control gum inflammation, reduce bleeding and improve the health of the tissues supporting the teeth.
Local anaesthetic may be used to improve comfort. You can also request for oral sedation to help improve relaxation and comfort during the procedure.
After treatment, regular reviews are important to assess healing and determine whether further gum care is needed before dental implant treatment can proceed.
Management of Damaged Teeth
In cases where your teeth are severely damaged, infected, fractured, have extensive decay or are affected by advanced gum disease, it might be necessary to remove these teeth as they are not suitable for long-term retention.
Your dental implant dentist will assess whether the tooth can be treated using procedures such as root canal treatment, gum treatment or restoration.
Where predictable repair is not possible, removal may be recommended to control infection and prevent further damage to the surrounding tissues.
The timing of extraction is carefully planned, particularly when dental implants are being considered.
In some cases, bone preservation or grafting may be carried out at the same appointment to help maintain the area for future tooth replacement.
Gum Recession Treatment
Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue pulls away from the tooth, exposing part of the root surface.
Treatment depends on the cause, severity and condition of the surrounding bone and gums.
Your dentist may recommend improved brushing techniques, professional cleaning, management of gum disease, desensitising products or adjustment of factors contributing to excessive pressure.
In more advanced cases, gum grafting or other periodontal procedures may be considered to protect the exposed root and improve tissue coverage.
Early treatment can help reduce sensitivity, limit further recession and protect the affected tooth before restorative or dental implant treatment is planned.
Weak and Insufficient Bone Treatment
If your dentist has informed you that you have insufficient bone for implant placement, there is nothing to worry about!
It simply means that you might require a bit more time or investment to get your implants done.
Bone grafting may be recommended when there is insufficient jawbone to support a dental implant in the intended position.
Bone loss can occur after tooth removal, gum disease, infection or prolonged denture use.
During the procedure, grafting material is placed in the deficient area to help create a more suitable foundation for implant treatment.
The graft may be carried out before implant placement or at the same appointment, depending on the amount of bone required and the complexity of the case.
Healing usually takes time, and not every patient requires grafting. Your dentist will assess your scans and discuss the expected stages, risks and costs.
Dental Implant Maintenance
Once you have completed your dental implant procedure, your dental implants journey is far from being over!
To ensure that your implants last for a lifetime, it is necessary to maintain them.
Dental implants require regular maintenance to keep the surrounding gums, bone and restoration healthy.
Although an implant cannot develop tooth decay, plaque and bacteria can still accumulate around it and cause inflammation or bone loss.
Maintenance visits may include professional cleaning, gum measurements, bite assessment and examination of the implant crown, bridge or denture.
Dental X-rays may occasionally be recommended to monitor the supporting bone.
Patients should also maintain effective brushing and interdental cleaning at home.
The recommended review interval depends on your gum condition, medical history, smoking status, implant design and ability to clean around the restoration.

At toofus™ Dental (Clementi), your out of pocket costs for the dental implant procedure will be $128.
Does CHAS cover dental implant treatment?

According to the CHAS guidelines, relevant CHAS holders can only subsidise treatments like the following:
- Dental crowns
- Root canal treatment
- Dentures

The above list is non-exhaustive and does not include all the treatments.
Can I do immediate dental implants at toofus™ Dental (Clementi)?
Yes, it is possible to do immediate (same-day) dental implants at toofus™ Dental (Clementi) if you are suitable for it.
Our dental implant dentists will assess your suitability for immediate dental implants during the consultation and provide advice and recommendations on the next steps.
Should you wish to do immediate dental implants based on the recommendations, we will arrange for same-day placement.
Can gum disease affect dental implant treatment?
Yes gum disease can definitely affect the outcomes of your dental implant treatment.
This is because dental implants require a solid foundation and support to place dental implants.
Without healthy gums, there is a high risk of dental implant failure.
In some cases, patients who choose to proceed with dental implants with prior gum disease treatment end up having to re-do dental implant treatment post-implant failure. Healing your gums and bone after implant failure takes 6-9 months.
If you have been advised to wait and treat your gum disease before proceeding with dental implants, it might be wise to treat gum disease before proceeding.
Can I get dental implants if I have insufficient bone?
Yes it is still possible to get dental implants if you have insufficient bone.
However, further steps must be taken before placing your dental implants.
In the case where there is minimal bone loss, your dental implant dentist might recommend doing simultaneous placement of bone graft with your implant surgery.
If you have severe bone loss, you might require a separate bone graft surgery to be done with a membrane placed.
In cases where bone loss is on the upper arch, it might be necessary to do a sinus lift to place bone graft before proceeding with an implant surgery.
What are the alternatives to dental implants?
There are many alternatives to dental implants if you do not wish to undergo implant surgery or wish for treatments that require less waiting time.
